Abstract [Anglais]

Artisanal mining of gold is a great business opportunity in Guinea. The annual production of gold (10,000-25,000 kg) attests the country’s gold potential. Artisanal mining of gold is mainly practiced in High Guinea, especially in Mandiana area. More than 50 mining permits are granted to mining companies in this area.  In this area located in the northeast of Guinea, an area is reserved for formal artisanal mining. This type of operation requires authorization from the authorities for plots of 0.5 ha. The application for the exploitation authorization is reserved for Guineans according to the Guinean mining code of 2011. The latter can seek technical and financial partners for mining operations. The feasibility of this type of operation has been assessed in this report. According to the results of the study, the area reserved for artisanal mining is already partially occupied by artisanal gold miners. Analysis of Landsat 8 OLI satellite images (taken in January 2019) shows that this reserved area is made up of 34% vegetation (plantation or natural forest), 16% of surface mining and 5% of underground artisanal mining of the area (totaling 731 ha). The price of gold (US $40) and the quality of gold (21-23 carrat) and the average grade of ore from the area (0.5 g/t) in the area are very favorable to operations. Using these parameters, we modeled the profitability for several daily productions. We should have show that it will only take 40 tonnes of ore to earn US $124 per day, so US $32,000 in interest for a year. Expenses include the base salary for a team of 19 members and the amortization of mechanized operating equipment over a year. After the amortization period, earnings can increase to more than US $500/day.

Résumé

L’exploitation artisanale de l’or est une grande opportunité d’affaire en Guinée. La production annuelle de l’or (10 000-25 000 kg) atteste la potentialité aurifère du pays. L’orpaillage de l’or se fait principalement en Haute Guinée surtout dans la préfecture de Mandiana. Plus de 50 permis d’exploitation sont octroyés à des compagnies minières dans cette zone. Dans cette préfecture située au Nord-Est de la Guinée, une zone est réservée à l’exploitation artisanale formelle. Ce type d’exploitation requière une autorisation auprès des autorités pour des parcelles de 0.5 ha. La demande de l’autorisation d’exploitation est réservée aux guinéens selon le code minier guinéen de 2011. Ce dernier peut chercher des partenaires techniques et financiers pour les opérations. La faisabilité de ce type d’exploitation a été évaluée dans ce rapport. Selon les résultats de l’étude, la zone réservée à l’exploitation artisanale est déjà partiellement occupée par des orpailleurs. L’analyse des images satellitaires Landsat 8 OLI (prises en Janvier 2019) montre que cette zone réservée est constituée de 34% de végétation (plantation ou forêt naturelle), 16% d’orpaillage superficielle et 5% d’orpaillage profond de la zone (qui fait au total 731 ha). Le prix de l’or (40 $US), la qualité de l’or (21-23 carrât) et la teneur moyenne des minerais de la préfecture (0.5 g/t) de la zone sont très favorables aux opérations. En utilisant ces paramètres, nous avons modélisé la rentabilité pour plusieurs productions journalières. Nous avons démontré qu’il faudrait seulement exploiter 40t de minerai pour gagner 124$ US par jour, donc 32 000 $US d’intérêt pendant une année. Les dépenses inclues comprennent le salaire de base d’une équipe de 19 personnes et l’amortissement des équipements de l’exploitation mécanisée au cours d’une année. Après la période d’amortissement, le bénéfice peut grimper à plus de 500$ US par jour.
